Airplane Mode On, Communication is Still Possible

Delta has now begun offering in-flight mobile messaging to their passengers on most flights to stay connected to friends and family.

"We know many of Delta's customers want or need to stay connected in the air and on the ground, which is why we're investing in an easy, free way to send and receive messages inflight through some of the most popular global platforms," statement given by Delta's CMO, Tim Mapes. We live in a technological driven world, that staying off your phone from messages, news, and calls, actually puts you behind in the time that you were in the air. Delta has figured it out, many flights already have wifi readily available, now through their Gogo wifi service, you can now send messages through their wifi service. What this means, is only messages that are wifi-enabled, iMessage, Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, are available to be sent from the air. So, if you're still sending text messages through SMS (sorry android), then you won't have much luck. Although you won't be able to "text," you still have the WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger app to be able to communicate. Also, the article states that no photos or videos will be able to be sent from your flight, it doesn't clarify as far as if this means MMS text messages or within these wifi-enabled apps. I personally do not see how they can stop it, when it's within the wifi-enabled apps.

As far as phone calls go, Delta's CEO says "Never in my lifetime." Maybe you have mixed feelings on this, but think, do you really want someone talking the whole time on your 4 hour flight across the states? I didn't think so.

Well we will take what we can get...that is for now. I think this is a great move in developing the in-flight experience for customers. Soon, I wouldn't be surprised if longer flights allowed customers to get access to their Hulu, Netflix, and other streaming video apps in their personal screens on seat backs. This would allow for customers to have control in their in-flight experience, and also be more motive to purchase the premium in-flight wifi.

It's important to move and adapt to customer's needs and wants, and Delta was the first major U.S. global carrier to listen and act on this request for messaging from the air to the ground.
