Personality Over Experience

Ever been absolutely terrified if you're not qualified enough for your dream job, or too worried that any work experience isn't good enough to get you into a specific field of work? That's okay, that's me. Well WayUp, may have an answer that can help you and I out when going to applying for our dream jobs.

WayUp, is a young site that is to be used by college students, recent graduates, and young professionals in search for that launch into a career. The popular resume social media platform used now is LinkedIn, where you build a profile to showcase your experience, previous projects/work, education, and other accomplishments along your career journey. Well it can be really disheartening if you go to fill out a LinkedIn profile, and leave many blanks, or hard to make connections. As college students and recent graduates, this isn't uncommon because you've been in school, maybe have had to work your way through part-time jobs to pay for school/living expenses, etc. So outside of connections through classes, your parents, a fraternity/sorority, maybe a friend, you may not be able to establish connections so you're left blank on where to reach out for internships or an entry-level position. WayUp is now allowing you to do all of the things you can on LinkedIn, but also showcase who you are as a person through your personality. On WayUp, "If you volunteer every weekend, you can include that. If you're an engineer, you can put your GitHub code in. If you're a photographer or a performer or a designer, you can put your Instagram in," WayUp CEO Liz Wessel said. "It's this fully colorful picture of who you are as a person." After hearing many complaints from employers and potential employees, fearing no experience or that edge of setting someone apart, Liz and her team wanted to start something different. Liz says, "We believed they had it, they just didn't know how to highlight it."

I believe WayUp is a great place to start as a college student or recent graduate. For myself, I love this idea because I will be graduating in December, with no professional experience outside of service-learning projects in many of my classes. Having had to work my way through college to pay for tuition, rent, food, and the night outs that make the college experience fun, it ultimately hindered me from being able to seek out internships or making connections. After many recent conversations, you begin to hear the same thing over and over again, about future employers and what they expect out of their entry-level professional. They want to get to know you as a professional to know if you're a right fit for their team to work well on their money-making projects. Well before, employers would have to navigate to each individual social media platform to investigate your page to get an idea of the kind of person that you are. Now, with WayUp they can visit your page there to gather any and all information about your personality there without looking to far. This saves them time and effort, which will most likely give you brownie points if you're lucky enough to score an interview and/or job. WayUp allows you to look professional, educated, and experienced with WHO you are instead of WHAT you are and have done.
